Currently, several companies are offering "smart locks" that can be controlled from smartphone apps and the web. Some require the entire lock to be replaced, while others can be added to the current lock. Some unlocks require a touch, while others just put your smartphone in your pocket. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but they all replace the 1,000-year-old technology with modern IT.
Below, I will introduce five models for those who are thinking about introducing them.
August
The $ 200 August Smart Lock is the most sophisticated look of the five models. Thanks to the design by Yves Bear (who is also in charge of designing Toshiba's dynabook and Sony).
Made of brushed aluminum, this circular lock replaces the old deadbolt key, allowing iOS, Android, and web applications to control and manage the lock. It tells you when certain people visit or leave your home, and you can give your friends and family an unlimited number of digital keys (you can even customize exactly how long, the day of the week, or the time your digital key is valid. ).
August uses power-saving Bluetooth to recognize that a digital key-enabled phone is nearby. You don't have to take the phone out of your pocket, it unlocks it automatically.
Lockitron
The $ 179 "Lockitron" is a small smart lock that attaches directly to the deadbolt behind the door (successor to the model introduced in 2011).
With a mobile web app, you can lock and unlock the door with a single tap, and this lock can be used on any smartphone. The app also allows friends, family and visitors to enter their homes. Since the lock itself has a built-in Wi-Fi function, information is notified wherever the user is. If you have an "iPhone 4S" or "iPhone 5", Lockitron will recognize that you've come to the door area via Bluetooth 4.0 and will unlock it without a key. It's made of plastic and isn't smart in design, but it's very easy to install.
